Landfill News

You may, or may not, know that Warboys has, at the Northern edge of the Village, a former brick works, the clay pit of which has since been used as a land-fill site. There has been much controversy over the last decade or so, concerning the use of this tip for what was, untill recently, called ‘Hazardous Waste’. This was achieved by the operators, Fenside Waste Management Ltd., without the granting of planning consent since, on the advice of the officers of Cambs. C.C., none was deemed necessary or applied-for.

However new European legislation, which came into force on the 1st July 2004, requires that such sites must take EITHER ‘Toxic Waste’, the new classification, or ‘Non-Toxic Waste’, BUT NOT BOTH.  Following the furore which resulted from the in-action of the County Council officers when the matter came up before, it was decided that Planning Consent WOULD be required in order for the operators to continue as a ‘Toxic Waste’ site.
